Introducing Greenwood, Mississippi! Greenwood is located in the heart of the Mississippi Delta and has about 15,000 residents. Greenwood was a major cotton producer in the 19th and 20th centuries and is full of history. Working your way through the Mississippi Blues Trail? There are several locations in Greenwood. Greenwood is located near Jackson, Mississippi (1hr 45min, 100 miles), Memphis, Tennessee (2hr, 130 miles), and Meridian, Mississippi (2hr 30min, 135 miles). Come visit this town to learn about the history of the Delta, the blues, and enjoy some southern cooking!
As mentioned, Greenwood has several stops on the Mississippi Blues Trail. The most popular stop is Robert Johnson’s Gravesite. Robert Johnson was a prominent blues artist in the 1930s and is considered by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to potentially be one of the first-ever “rock stars.” There is a lot of lore surrounding his rise to success, which we highly recommend you check out for yourself.
Greenwood is in the Mississippi Delta, an area of the Mississippi floodplains that has fertile soil. The Delta is rich in history, and visitors can learn more at the Museum of the Mississippi Delta. While exploring, see the Emmett Till statue in downtown Greenwood. Emmett Till died at age 14 after being lynched in 1955, leading to national attention on Mississippi’s racial violence.
